Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss important aspects of the biology, pathogenesis and epidemiology of melanoma
  • Evaluate emerging technologies for biomarker identification and the potential impact of biomarkers on treatment and management of melanoma
  • Integrate important advances in diagnostic and imaging methodologies into clinical practice
  • Describe emerging concepts and progress in the role of surgery and staging of melanoma
  • Explain the role of the immune system in melanoma pathogenesis and identify immunological targets for therapy
  • Evaluate the therapeutic benefit from immunotherapeutic strategies such as anti–CTLA-4 monoclonal antibodies and Toll-like receptor agonists based on their effect on the signaling pathways involved in T-cell regulation and activation
  • Analyze recent progress in melanoma vaccine development
  • Discuss the molecular biology and therapeutic potential of targeting signal transduction pathways involved in the pathogenesis of melanoma, such as the MAPK and PI3K pathways, as well as mediators of angiogenesis
