This educational activity is specifically designed for medical oncologists, dermatologists, and other physicians, physicians-in-training, and healthcare professionals interested in and/or involved in the care of patients with melanoma and its consequences. No specialized knowledge or skill other than general familiarity with internal medicine, oncology, or dermatology is required for successful participation in this activity.

  O B J E C T I V E S

After successfully completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the basic concepts of immunotherapy and how each type can be used as a treatment modality in oncology
  • Discuss the role immune tolerance plays in allowing the growth and spread of cancer cells
  • Explain the specific role of CTLA-4 in maintaining immune tolerance and how inhibiting its function can be used in the treatment of malignant melanoma
  • Compare and contrast emerging biological agents, primarily vaccines and cytokines, that are used to stimulate and target a patient’s own immune response against a tumor and are currently in trials for use against melanoma
