Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, primary care physicians, nurses, other practicing clinicians, and healthcare administrators who are interested and/or involved in the management of breast cancer.

Overview
This online activity is a Webcast of the “13th Annual Perspectives in Breast Cancer” meeting that was held in Boston on October 5-6, 2007. The presentations encompass a multitude of topics in breast cancer, such as diagnostic and prognostic issues, surgery and radiotherapy, treatment of early and late stage disease, as well as toxicity and side effect management issues. A preconference program, titled “Challenges in Breast Cancer Nursing,” is included and is also a remarkable group of lectures.

Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify patients who would benefit from chemoprevention and differentiate the risks and benefits of various agents
  • Select the most appropriate techniques for screening, diagnosis, and initial evaluation of breast cancer
  • Identify the latest and most important prognostic and predictive factors in breast cancer
  • Identify and explain the appropriate therapeutic options for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ, early stage, or metastatic cancer
  • Describe the latest developments in surgery, radiation therapy, and systemic therapy for the treatment of breast cancer
  • Discuss effective management of side effects and toxicities secondary to oncologic therapies
  • Evaluate and integrate recent clinical trial data regarding hormonal and targeted therapies into a cohesive therapeutic plan for patients
  • List the most promising future strategies for the management of breast cancer
  • Explain nursing issues related to breast cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, as well as feasible resolutions
